Importance of a collaborative approach to lymphoedema management

Stacy Pugh.  Chronic Oedema April 2019

Chronic oedema management can involve several different healthcare professionals in practice. Although there are specialist centres available throughout the United Kingdom, it is not always necessary for them to have the most input with an individual patient. In some circumstances, it would be more appropriate for the healthcare professionals treating the patient on a day-to-day basis to receive support, advice and guidance from the specialist practitioner at their local lymphoedema service. This article highlights several issues related to the coordination required in lymphoedema management and presents some important considerations that could facilitate a satisfactory outcome for both the patient and the community team involved in their care.

Main findings

  • Collaboration with other healthcare professionals can be key to positive patient outcomes.
  • Education of colleagues can provide an understanding of each other’s roles.
  • Raising awareness of the condition with other healthcare professionals can improve the referral process to specialist services for patients.
