The use of therapeutic laser – webinars

Therapeutic laser is increasingly being used in the management of lymphoedema and musculoskeletal dysfunction. Practitioners need to keep abreast of the latest research and clinical applications.

There are different prerequisites for each course which reflects the scope of practice of these health professionals.

Course 1 Introduction to Laser Safety Parameters and Dosages: How to get to where you want to be

No prior lymphedema certification is required.

This course is offered to all Medical Practitioners, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Nurses, Podiatrists, Accredited Exercise Physiologists, Massage Therapists, Physiotherapy Assistants, Occupational Therapist Assistants, Nursing students and students undertaking health professional qualifications.

Course 2 Therapeutic laser for the management of lymphoedema

This course is an advanced level class. Participants should have successfully completed a level 1 or equivalent lymphoedema course that is recognised by the Australasian Lymphology Association.

Participants can be physiotherapists, occupational therapists, medical practitioners, registered nurses ( Division 1), or massage therapists with Diploma of Remedial Massage (this is a minimum requirement) from a Registered Training Organisation listed with the National Training Information Service and may include qualifications that specify a primary modality such as ‘Diploma of Remedial Massage (Myotherapy).

Note: It is the participant’s responsibility to ensure that the skills acquired in this class are within their scope of practice.

Please note participants that want to register in webinar 2 must complete webinar 1 first.

Course 3 The use of therapeutic laser in the management of musculoskeletal conditions

This course is open to medical practitioners, occupational therapists and physiotherapists

NOTE: It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that the skills acquired in this class are within their scope of practice.

Please note participants that want to register in webinar 3 must complete webinar 1 first.

Course structure

Each course consists of a distance learning component and a webinar. The courses are underpinned by evidence based learning and the content reflects current best practice.

Distance Learning Component

The distance learning component will prepare you for the webinar.
It is via the Lymphoedema Education Solutions on line Learning Management System. You will be provided with access to this site approximately 4 weeks prior to the webinar. There will be a short quiz that needs to be successfully completed prior to the webinar.

Webinar Component

The length of each webinar is approximately1.5 hours. The presentations will include lectures, videos, interactive polls and an opportunity for questions. It will build on the distance learning component.

Course details

Distance Learning Component

Participants are encouraged to commence this component as soon as they receive their course information. They will receive it via email approximately 4 weeks prior to the face to face study day.

Presenter

Sharon Tilley is a Principal Physiotherapist at the Lymphoedema and Laser Therapy clinic in Adelaide, South Australia. Together with Flinders University this clinic undertook inaugural research investigating the effects of low level laser on breast cancer related lymphoedema in 1995.

In 1989, while working in the position of Outpatient Senior at the Royal Darwin Hospital she purchased her first laser for use in the area of hand rehabilitation and wound management. She has predominantly worked in the area of lymphoedema management since 2000 and now has 11 lasers in her current clinic.

She has been published in the UK Journal of Lymphoedema and has presented for, and held committee positions within the Australian Physiotherapy Association, the Australasian Lymphology Association and the Australian Medical Lasers Association. She was recently invited to present a workshop on the use of laser in lymphoedema management at the World Association Of Laser Therapy in Washington DC. (read more…)
